For South Korean pop singers, launching a state-of-the-art music video to kick-start their careers after a hiatus from the local scene is de rigueur, but Lee Jung-hyun’s latest offering is far from usual: it features a ghost bride and zombie bridesmaids.
The singer and actress, who is also known as AVA abroad, launched K-pop single “V” last week after spending the past three years singing in China and acting. The music video, in which Ms. Lee plays a bride-to-be who dies a day before her wedding and haunts the groom-to-be, was created by celebrity director Park Chan-wook.
Ms. Lee’s timing couldn’t be better—horror and thriller movies are the most popular genre in South Korea in summer, because Koreans believe these movies help scare the heat away.
The unusual music video, which Ms. Lee described as creepy and comical, has attracted the attention of local media. The zombie make-up for her dancers took four hours to complete, and filming spanned four days and three nights –double the usual time in the K-pop industry.
Mr. Park, who is well-known globally for thriller movies like “Old Boy,” first co-operated with Ms. Lee in 2010, when the actress was the leading lady in his movie “Night Fishing.”
Ms. Lee made her K-pop debut in 1999 and was known for her dance moves and loud costumes, which later earned her the nickname of South Korea’s Lady Gaga. The South Korean singer was one of the opening acts for Lady Gaga’s Seoul concert in 2009.
But Ms. Lee has been focusing on entertaining her Chinese fans in recent years with a song called “Wa.”
Although the Korean love song about a woman’s pleas for her ex-boyfriend to return to her is more than a decade old, it remains popular in China.
“The song is widely known in China–many Chinese singers have performed cover versions of the song,” she says, adding that its lyrics and her warrior persona for the song have attracted Chinese listeners.
These days, Ms. Lee is busy staging live performances of her music video for “V,” but South Korean fans hoping to see more of the singer and actress will likely be disappointed..
“There’s nothing I wish more than to be able to maintain the title of singer and actress,” says Ms. Lee, who will be departing for China in about a week.
