Meschery is the son of Russian immigrant parents, born in Manchuria, China, and relocated with his family to a Japanese internment camp near Tokyo during WWII. The family later settled in San Francisco where he graduated from St. Mary’s College and was drafted in the first round by Philadelphia. He played ten years in the NBA for the Golden State Warriors and the Seattle Supersonics. After coaching in the old American Basketball Association, he attended the University of Iowa Writers Workshop where he received his Master’s of Fine Arts degree.
